Description
Elsie Lavender and Homer Hickam (the father of the author) were high school classmates in the West Virginia coalfields. When Homer asked her to marry him, she left and had a fling in Florida, but later returned and the couple were married. Albert was Elsie's pet alligator, but he did not fit into the couple's new life and had to be returned to Florida.
