Description
"Beyond Wu T'ai Shan were the rich fields and grasslands of Central China where we lived. The Yangtse River, in comparison to which the Mississippi is a brook, is a vivid part of China's landscape. Its sources are in Himalayan snows and it divides China into two areas, one called "North of the River" and the other "South of the River." Both are vast areas, for China is a third again as large as the United States and its landscape is even more various, from the tropics of the south to the icy deserts and bare mountains of the north. Great cities, thousands of towns, millions of villages shelter the people. Chinese do not live in isolated farmhouses as Americans do. Farmers live in clan villages and go out daily to work on their land. The Chinese are gregarious and do not like being alone. They like to talk and laugh and gossip, a lively, cheerful people who joke and make puns and enjoy food. Are they difficult to understand? Not in the least, once one understands - or takes the trouble to understand - their ways!" --,Back cover
