To Christina Olson, the entire world was her family's remote farm in the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. Born in the home her family had lived in for generations, and increasingly incapacitated by illness, Christina seemed destined for a small life. Instead, for more than twenty years, she was host and inspiration for the artist Andrew Wyeth, and became the subject of one of the best known American paintings of the twentieth century.

"Andrew Wyeth painted the landscapes and people in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where he grew up, and in mid-coast Maine, where he spent each summer--places that would inspire him for over seven decades. This centennial exhibition is a fitting moment to trace the threads that weave through the art of Andrew Wyeth, which never failed to engage viewers and confound critics through the long twentieth century"--

Through unprecedented access to family members, archival materials, and his work, this program presents the most complete portrait of the artist, bearing witness to a legacy just at the moment it is evolving.

Twenty years ago, Logsdonthen a roving editor for Farm Journal (which he still edits)poked around rural Pennsylvania and Maine, interviewing people whom Andrew Wyeth had featured in various portrait paintings. This slim, hero-worshipping volume resulted, and one can understand why the artist asked Logsdon to desist from his snooping. Among those with whom Logsdon chatted were lumberman Ralph Cline (immortalized in Wyeth's The Patriot), Willard Snowden...

This oversize out-of-print book is a must for Wyeth fans and collectors of fine art publications. The reproductions are the finest I have seen in any Wyeth art books, and perhaps the finest I've come across in any art publication. To quote from the dust jacket, "the paintings to be reproduced (almost the entire body of his major work [in 1968]) were photographed directly from the originals ... Those paintings most difficult to reproduce, about half...

Richard Meryman began an enduring friendship with Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) while on the job as a Life magazine editor in 1964. For Meryman, this unique friendship yielded more than four decades of recorded conversations with Wyeth, his family, friends and neighbors in Wyeth's homes in Pennsylvania and Maine. Meryman notes that, whether during formal interviews, shared meals, car rides or long walks, "Wyeth applied to himself the same sensitive understandings...
